Windows WEP

Router and Computer Settings

When configuring your Windows WEP settings you must ensure your wireless security settings are consistent with your router settings.

WEP or Wireless Encryption Protocol is usually supported in two basic formats, 64 bit and 128 bit, 128 bit produces a more complex key.

In the graphic below we see the wireless security settings in our router, in this case a Linksys WRT160N.

Here you can see that we are employing WEP set at a 64 bit key.
The Passphrase is a handy tool because it allows you to input a familiar name or word...choose Generate, and it produces 4 key options.
The TX Key is an option, if you want to Transmit a key, you will see this later in the Windows WEP settings as well.

TigerDirect

Let's get to the Windows settings:

Control Panel
Network Connections
Right click on your Wireless Network Connection
Select Properties
Select the Wireless Networks tab

windows wep, wireless properties, wireless security, wep

Highlight the wireless network you want to configure for WEP and select Properties.

windows wep, wireless linksys

Here you see we have the like standard of WEP selected and we have manually entered one of our four keys generated by the router. You can also see our option to receive the key automatically and where we would select the key 1 - 4 which we chose to have transmitted in the router under the TX Key. Personally I would not transmit the key.
