Windows 7
Release Candidate
My first notes of my trial of Windows 7 Release Candidate.
My 32 bit test machine (HP Pavilion 746c): Intel P4 2.4GHz 768 Mb RAM Integrated Intel Extreme Graphics with up to 64 MB shared system memory allocated to video
Stated minimum 32 bit requirements: 1 GHz processor 1 GB RAM DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
The Release Candidate is a free trial download but will begin to shut down every two hours on/after March 1, 2010. A complete installation will be required to continue using Windows 7, so you should have a migration plan for files and settings if you decide to purchase the licensed software.
Windows 7, Hardware and Software Compatibility. What you need to know about XP Mode.

For the most part I have been impressed with how well Windows 7 has run on my test hardware. While my overall memory and graphics fall short of the minimum they have performed reasonably well in a standard home office role.
What runs wellW7 has proven to have great network discovery abilities, it quickly recognizes other computers, print servers, and Network Attached Storage devices.
What has not run wellTrend Micro Internet Security, Security Center notifies you that you do not have anti-virus installed. There is a built in shortcut to advise you on the currently available software, I chose Trend Micro, on every restart however, I have to confirm that it is a trusted application. Streaming Media from my NAS, seems to want to scan the directory content every time I try to access it. Given the amount of content I have this takes hours, I obviously can not use this. Did not runXP Mode, you definitely need a processor capable of running Windows Virtual PC. What you can do is use VMware Workstation. When I did this I could not install the OS of the virtual machine at the initial setup, it hung every time, instead I had to opt to install the OS at a later time, after that it ran Obuntu 8.04 very well.
Overall I believe this will prove to be a great operating system. This is Vista taken to the next level. BitLocker to Go and App Locker are features which continue to build Security in relevant areas.
