Software Problems

Recovering from Unstable Changes

An unstable operating system can be caused by:

Software Installations
Driver installation and updates
Software Updates
Virus/Malware

Best practices recommend making one change to your computer at a time, it may seem like a lot of extra effort but if your change results in software problems you have a better chance of correcting it quickly. So if you are going to install antivirus and a new printer...do one, reboot; and then do the next.

System is Unstable and you know why

Shutdown and boot into Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key.

In Safe Mode go to Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs - and uninstall the software

For driver related issues use Control Panel | System | Hardware tab | Device Manager
Select the Properties of the device (right click) | Driver tab | Roll Back Driver

System is unstable, but you don't know why

This could be caused by a virus or an update but you don't know exactly what, all you know is yesterday it was fine today it's not. In this case use System Restore from Safe Mode

Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools | System Restore | Restore to an earlier time.
