Managing Your PC Memory

and Performance w/Processes

If you are experiencing slow performance with your PC the first thing to do is evaluate your current memory configuration using real-time monitoring available through Task Manager and Performance Monitor. On my Memory Management Page I review what parameters are of interest and how Windows uses virtual memory to support both the operating system and programs.Below are the How To's for improving pc speed and managing virtual memory.

To manage your PC memory and tune performance you can perform the following:
- From Control Panel
- System
- Advanced Tab
Performance
Settings

On the Visual Effects Tab, Select the Adjust for Best Performance radio button

-Advanced Tab
Virtual Memory
Change

Here you have two choices, system managed size OR Custom Size.If you have been receiveing "Low Virtual Memory" error messages this is where you can solve that. Either change it to system managed size or, if it is currently set on custom, double your current settings as a first step, generally it should be double the size of your physical memory.

Managing Processes

You can use Windows Task Manager to fine tune running processes.

Open Task Manager:

Hold down CTRL and Shift, hit the ESC key.

On the Processes Tab, Select a NON-system Process

Right click for munu and select Set Priority

Use this sparingly but it can aid you in troubleshooting and fine tuning performance.

I have produced two videos in regard to performance tuning, the first Improving Performance w/memory presents (as described above)a tuning technique I believe most people would be comfortable with. The second Performance w/processes reviews a technique which requires more time and analysis, but may interest more advanced individuals.
